“Team Heco” set their sights on the GreenPower International Finals
Huxlow Science College are excited to announce that they will be entering their first ever GreenPower race team for the 2018 season. The challenge requires students, guided by their teachers and industry mentors, to design, build and then race an electric car. Established in 1999, the GreenPower Education Trust works with 500 schools and over 8000 students, culminating in the annual International Finals at Rockingham Motor Speedway in October.
A group of 14-15 year old students at Huxlow heard about GreenPower, created a proposal and pitched the idea to their teachers as a way of building up their skills and experience in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) to set them up for their future careers.
Consequently, a brand new race team, “Team Heco” has been set up to compete in GreenPower events throughout the 2018 season. “This will give us a valuable educational experience in a fun but challenging project” said Joe Bonas, a founding member of the team. They will also have the opportunity to gain an extra qualification, the AQA GreenPower Award, and work on their Leadership, Organisation, Communication, Initiative and Resilience (LORIC) skills, a focus for all Huxlow students.
Huxlow Science College would like to thank Motorola and the Finedon Educational Trust for their generous grants which have got the project off the ground. The team are now offering local businesses an opportunity to get involved in the project; they are looking for sponsorship, resources and expertise. If you would like to find out more about these opportunities please contact the school on 01933 650496 or email@example.com
Huxlow Science College envisages a sustainable project with a three year plan to expand. In particular, they hope to engage local primary schools in the IET Formula Goblin category for 9-11 year olds, with existing team members mentoring the younger students and helping their teachers to launch the project.
Mr J Tufnail said: “As the Learning Leader of Design Technology I was delighted to be approached by an enthusiastic group of Year 10’s to discuss their idea of being involved in the GreenPower F24 challenge. A challenge that requires a lot of Design and Engineering skill that ultimately also enables the team to take part in a nationally recognised range of competitive racing events. I offered mine and my team’s support in helping the boys reach their vision and assistance in getting them to the events held at such national racing venues as Goodwood and Rockingham race circuit. All credit to these guys, it shows initiative, determination and independence. They have assisted in fund raising as they realised it could only happen if the funding could be found. I am so pleased that the first funding hurdles have been achieved and the build has started; the race planning and team running is currently being put together. Well done Team Heco.”
