Learning a foreign language is empowering. There is no denying that foreign language skills are increasingly important in modern Britain and hugely benefit trade and employment.
The Modern Foreign Languages department at Huxlow Academy takes pride in ensuring that students are equipped with the tools which will make them stand out in modern Britain. The department has a record of sustained high results in the French language at GCSE level and high engagement in lessons thanks to a strong focus on the cultural capital.
French films, music, artists, food, architecture, sport, geography, history and lifestyle are part of students’ everyday learning, and this has made language learning at Huxlow Academy quite unique and so successful over the years.
Fundamentals of teaching and learning in French:
- Repetition of topics from year 7 to year 11 thus embedding and deepening the knowledge progressively
- 4 National Curriculum and GCSE exam skills practised from year 7 to year 11 (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking)
- Vocabulary typed and given to students so that the learning can be reinforced at home and students can catch up any missed work
- Engaging lessons, chunked and scaffolded, so that all learners can be supported and challenged
- Adaptive teaching with choices given to students at KS3 level so that students can build confidence
- Cultural capital part of everyday teaching thanks to the choice of resources, topics, traditions, films and music
