Vision
At Huxlow Academy, our science curriculum aims to ignite curiosity and inspire understanding of the natural world. We guide students to develop a deep appreciation for scientific principles, foster a culture of inquiry, and equip them with skills for lifelong learning. Our curriculum is crafted to build confidence and competency in scientific knowledge, practical skills, and critical thinking, preparing all students to navigate and contribute to a rapidly evolving world.
Intent
Our science curriculum from KS3 to KS4 is carefully sequenced to ensure students build a solid foundation in core scientific principles and gradually progress to more complex concepts in preparation for GCSEs. We follow the Key Stage 3 National Curriculum for Years 7, and 8 focusing on developing a broad understanding across physics, chemistry, and biology. From Year 9 to Year 11, students transition to the AQA GCSE Combined Science curriculum, deepening their scientific knowledge and practical skills.
Each topic has been chosen and sequenced to ensure logical progression, reinforce key skills, and facilitate connections between scientific concepts:
KS3 (Years 7-8) introduces essential scientific principles across biology, chemistry, and physics. For example, Year 7 begins with fundamental topics like States of Matter, Energy, and Atoms and the Periodic Table, establishing a foundational understanding of matter, energy, and atomic structure. Students then explore Cells, Forces and Motion, and Chemical Reactions, gaining a balanced introduction to both physical and life sciences. This progression ensures that by the end of Year 8, students have covered topics such as Genetics, Ecology, and Space, offering a comprehensive view of science in nature and society.
KS4 (Years 9 - 11) focuses on refining scientific inquiry and applying principles in real-world contexts. By revisiting core concepts like Energy, Atoms and the Periodic Table, and Chemical Reactions, we deepen students' understanding and enable them to engage with more sophisticated topics such as Electricity, Health and Disease, Homeostasis, and Ecology and Evolution. Practical investigations and quantitative skills are integrated to enhance problem-solving and analytical abilities, preparing students for assessments and future STEM pathways.
