Character Education at Huxlow Academy
At Huxlow Academy, character education is a deliberate and integral part of our vision of “Thriving Through Excellence.” We are committed to developing students not only academically, but also as responsible, resilient and compassionate individuals who demonstrate strong moral character.
Central to our approach are our core values:
Ambition: Encouraging students to strive for excellence in all they do, fostering high aspirations and celebrating both effort and achievement
Respect: Cultivating empathy, dignity, equity, diversity, and fairness, and promoting mutual respect across our school community
Pride: Instilling a deep sense of pride in personal accomplishments and contributions to the wider community, preparing students to become confident, conscientious adults
Through this approach, we aim to help students grow into well-rounded individuals who live out these values and are ready to face the challenges of modern life with confidence and integrity.
Pride of Huxlow Awards
The Pride of Huxlow Awards form an important part of our character education provision. These awards recognise and celebrate students who consistently demonstrate excellent character development and embody the values of Ambition, Respect and Pride in their everyday actions.
The awards focus not only on academic success, but also on the qualities that shape future success, including:
- Perseverance and resilience
- Kindness and empathy
- Leadership and service
- Commitment to self-improvement
- Positive contribution to the school and wider community
Form tutors nominate two students a week to be considered for a Pride of Huxlow award, and the Head of House decides on the overall winner.
Personal Development at Huxlow Academy
Our vision for Personal Development is for every student, regardless of background, to thrive and grow in character. We believe that active participation in school life and engagement in a wide range of opportunities are essential to developing confident, well-rounded individuals.
Our key priorities include:
1. Responsive PSHE Curriculum
A comprehensive and adaptable PSHE curriculum that reflects the needs, experiences and diversity of our students and community.
2. Student Leadership and Aspiration
Creating a culture of aspiration through leadership opportunities that empower students to take ownership of their growth and contribute meaningfully to school life.
3. Career Preparedness
A structured careers programme that aligns with student ambitions and is supported by high-quality tools and guidance, ensuring all students are prepared for their futures.
4. Expanded Extra-Curricular Opportunities
A wide and inclusive range of extra-curricular activities and trips that enable students to discover new interests, develop skills and broaden their horizons.
5. Parental Involvement
Strong partnerships with parents and carers, recognising their vital role in supporting each child’s personal development journey.
This vision ensures an equal emphasis on academic success and character development, supported by both school and community.
Celebrating Character Beyond the Classroom
At Huxlow Academy, we recognise that character is developed both inside and outside of school. We actively celebrate the achievements and personal growth of our students in all areas of their lives.
We are proud to highlight students who demonstrate commitment, determination and passion through activities such as:
- Sports and physical achievement
- Cadets, Scouts and Guides
- Performing arts and creative pursuits
- Volunteering and community service
- Hobbies and personal challenges
We warmly encourage parents and carers to share these achievements with us by sending in photos and stories of what their children have chosen to pursue independently.
Every achievement matters. Whether big or small, these experiences build confidence, resilience and character. By celebrating them, we reinforce our belief that all students can aspire, succeed and thrive.
A Culture of Aspiration and Celebration
At Huxlow Academy, we celebrate effort, progress and character as much as outcomes. Through initiatives like the Pride of Huxlow Awards and our commitment to recognising achievements beyond the classroom, we create a culture where every student feels valued, motivated and inspired.
Together, we are building a community where character is recognised, achievement is celebrated, and every student is empowered to thrive.
