Understanding Your Child's Progress Report
All reports include information about attendance, behaviour points, attitude to learning, behaviour in lessons, and homework. The academic progress section differs depending on your child's year group.
Attendance and Engagement
Attendance: We aim to ensure that all students have a minimum attendance of 95%. Even small changes in attendance can have large impacts on outcomes and learning.
Positive Points: The cumulative total for this year. Every time a student does what they need to in a lesson, they receive a positive subject stamp. This increases when students work above expectations.
Negative Points: Also totalled for the year. This helps you look at the balance between positives and negatives. YCDBs, NILS, PARKs and other sanctions carry points. We want this number to be as small as possible.
Key Stage 3 Reports (Years 7, 8 and 9)
Academic Progress
% from Assessment: Shows your child's current performance in the subject, expressed as a percentage. This is based on recent assessments and classwork and reflects their understanding and application of the knowledge and skills taught so far in Key Stage 3.
Comment: This descriptor gives you an indicator of whether your child is making appropriate progress for this stage of Key Stage 3, or whether there may be areas that require additional support or focus at home. Comments include:
- "Student is making excellent progress in this subject"
- "Student is making expected progress in this subject"
Key Stage 4 Reports (Years 10 and 11)
Academic Progress
Minimum Target: This is the average grade that a student with the same ability would attain from the same KS2 starting point. We call this the minimum target – the least that a student should be aiming to attain by the end of Year 11.
Working At Grade (WAG): This is not a prediction; it is simply where we feel a student is on their journey at this point in time. It is important to understand that we would not expect Year 10 students to be working at their target grade yet – they are still developing their knowledge and skills. The working at grade shows their current level of understanding and performance in that subject.
Distance to Target: We calculate the difference between the working at grade and the minimum expected grade for the end of Year 11. A negative number at this stage is not necessarily a cause for concern, as students are still progressing through their learning journey. However, the size of the gap helps us identify where additional support or challenge may be needed.
Comment: This descriptor gives you an indicator of whether there is cause for concern at this stage with how they are performing, or whether they are making appropriate progress. Comments include:
- "Excellent Progress: You are performing above the expected level and are on track to exceed your minimum target"
- "On Track: You are making good, expected progress and are on the correct path to achieve your minimum target"
- "Targeted Focus Needed: You require focused effort in this subject to close the progress gap and secure your minimum target"
Attitude to Learning, Behaviour and Homework (All Year Groups)
The colour coding helps you identify where there may be aspects to praise or support.
Rating 1: Attitude to Learning: Consistently demonstrates exceptional focus, effort, and engagement in learning Behaviour: Excellent - Consistently positive attitude and engagement. Shows exemplary respect, focus, and effort; models the Huxlow values at all times. Contributes meaningfully, supports peers, and takes full responsibility for learning. Homework: Always completed on time, high quality
Rating 2: Attitude to Learning: Usually focused and motivated, contributes positively to lessons Behaviour: Good - Usually positive and engaged. Follows expectations, contributes well, and completes work to a good standard. May need an occasional reminder but responds promptly and respectfully. Homework: Usually completed, generally good standard
Rating 3: Attitude to Learning: Engagement and effort are inconsistent; needs reminders to stay on task Behaviour: Needs Improvement - Inconsistent engagement or attitude. Occasionally distracts others or requires repeated reminders. Work effort or focus is below expected standard for the lesson. Homework: Sometimes completed, variable quality
Rating 4: Attitude to Learning: Rarely shows effort or focus; frequently disengaged from learning Behaviour: Poor - Frequently off task or disruptive. Fails to meet expectations despite intervention. Work incomplete or poor in effort and attitude; may warrant a sanction or removal. Homework: Rarely completed or poor quality
Rating A: Absent (applies to all three categories) Rating N: Not Applicable (homework only)
How We Use This Data
As soon as the data is compiled into this report in our system, it is available to the teachers and heads of department. They analyse this carefully, planning support for students who need it and further challenge for those who are ready. This is then used to look at aspects of intervention, grouping and patterns which we as a school seek to address.
